The book, How the Word is Passed, is equal parts beautiful and devastating. What Dr. Smith does so artfully, in the book and in this podcast, is draw the line from our country’s history of chattel slavery to today’s prison system. That’s not a revelation in and of itself but it’s how he does it. His own witnessing drops you into a place and experience that I have not been able to access in any other way.
